As an Alabama homeowner, you have the following rights under your insurance policy:

  1. The right to receive from your insurer, upon request, a current copy of your homeowners insurance policy and any endorsements thereto and a written explanation of coverages, limitations, and exclusions.

  2. The right to be informed by your insurer of any changes in policy coverage, limitations, or exclusions at least 45 days prior to the renewal date of your policy.

  3. The right to receive from your insurer a written explanation of the basis for the insurer’s denial of a claim or offer of a compromise settlement.

  4. The right to be informed by your insurer of your right to submit a complaint to the Alabama Department of Insurance if you believe your claim has been wrongfully denied or settled.

  5. The right to receive from your insurer acknowledgment of your claim within 15 working days of notification of the claim and payment or denial of your claim within 45 days of submission of a proof of loss.

  6. The right to receive from your insurer a written explanation as to why your application for homeowners insurance has been denied within 30 days of the denial.

  7. The right to be informed by your insurer of any discount available under your policy for protective devices, age of insured, or other factors.

  8. The right to be informed by your insurer of the availability of the Alabama Insurance Underwriting Association (beach and windstorm plan) or FAIR Plan if you have been denied coverage in the voluntary market.

  9. The right to receive from your insurer a written explanation of the basis for any premium increase.

  10. The right to receive from your insurer a written explanation of the basis for any cancellation or nonrenewal of your policy at least 45 days prior to the effective date of cancellation or nonrenewal.

  11. The right to be treated fairly and honestly by your insurance company and its agents.
